Originally formed as Poynton Amateurs Football Club in 1883, few records of their successes are traceable , but it is known that they have played in the same division as Stockport County Reserves. Lord Vernon gave land on London Road, Poynton, to be used for the playing of football and it was through this donation that the club was formed. During the Clubs years in the Lancashire & Cheshire league they made steady progress winning Division 3 in 1970-71, topping Division 2 at the end of season 1977-78 and Division 1 Champions in 1984-85. They also lifted the Stockport senior Cup and added the Cheshire Aggregate Cup to make it a hat trick of trophies which prompted them to apply to join the Mid Cheshire League in 1986. The last twenty five years has seen the club establish itself in the Mid-Cheshire League, in both the first division, and the Reserve division. Since 2001 the first team have finished Division 1 runners-up twice, won the Presidents Cup twice and won a hat trick of Stockport Cups in the same period. The Reserves won the Macclesfield & District Cup in 2001-02 and successive Mid-Cheshire League Cups in 06/07 & 07/08.
