2020 AGM Report

The 2020 AGM, for various reasons, was held very late this year and as a result of the Covid19 epidemic was held as a Zoom meeting with 32 participants (a better turn out than the normal face to face AGM held at the Club. The meeting commenced with an address by our President Brian Hudson.

The President’s Address – Brian Hudson

“This certainly will not be the address that I would have expected, and indeed, wanted to make at this meeting, but unfortunately the circumstances in which we find ourselves determines how we manage our affairs.

I will first of all express my sincere hope that all of you are well, and have escaped any direct
personal, health effects of this indiscriminate virus. The recent news concerning the development of vaccines gives us some optimism for a return, early, I hope, in the new year to some sort of resumption of our sports. When that happens, we shall all be grateful for all the hard work, a lot of it unseen, by your club Officers, and your Section Officers which will mean that we can continue the winter sports to a proper conclusion of their seasons, and anticipate keenly the start of the summer sports season.

With that in mind, I want to pay tribute to the work one by your Officers. There is always a danger of omitting individuals by making specific reference to some, but in this instance, there are three people whose efforts since March have been phenomenal – Hon Treasurer David Holt, Hon Secretary Howard Smith and Ground Chairman Keith Davies. Their dedication will mean that we shall be in a strong position as we can be, both on and off the field, when sport resumes. Thank you to them, and to everybody else who has done so much to keep our club alive.

I end by wishing all of you the very best, have as brilliant a Christmas as is possible, and welcome 2021 with Hope and Optimism.

Enjoy your sport and enjoy your Club”

Going into the meeting we still had vacancies for a Club Chairman and Ground Chairman and the usual number of officer posts which have remained unfilled for a number of years. As the meeting progressed it was hopped that some of the vacancies may be filled by volunteers during the meeting, however the important role of Ground Chairman remained unfilled. On the Brighter side Brian Hudson Proposed Mark Warburton as new Club
Chairman, seconded by Howard Smith, Mark followed this by proposing James (Jimmy) Williams as Vice Chairman. Both candidates being appointed with approval of the members present.

A number of members present challenged the appointments and did not know any history
of Mark nor Jimmy. To add some background to the appointments both Mark and Jimmy
have penned short personal biographies which I have included below for everybody’s

Mark Warburton – Chairman PSC

Reflecting on his appointment Mark said

“I feel incredibly honoured to have been appointed into this position.

I joined the sports club as a member/player in 1993 and have played both Football & Cricket for the respective sections.

As well as being Chairman & Secretary of the Football section for a number of years I have been an active member of both the Ground and House & Bar committees.

I spent 40 years working in the leisure industry which I hope will help me in fulfilling the role to which I have been appointed and still have a passion for sport & exercise swimming every day when I can.

I intend to continue the fantastic work done by previous Chairman of the club.

It is with great pleasure I announce that ‘Jimmy Williams’ will be our Vice Chairman.

Jimmy is fantastic appointment in my opinion and I’m sure we will have the determination and drive to get us through what is a difficult time, there are also a number of very important projects to oversee, including the proposed move which is at a critical stage.

We appreciate that due to a number of factors beyond our control communication has been difficult especially with our community, we pledge that the good work started in this area will continue.

We look forward to meeting all club and community members when things get back to normal.”

James Williams – Vice Chairman PSC

“When asked by Mark if I would assist him as vice chair, it did not take long for me to dwell over this as we have worked very well together previously at the Sports Club.

I have been at the club for over 40 years, in the winter months playing football and coming up through the junior ranks and progressing into the senior squads, during my time within the football section I took on the role of secretary originally for the senior section then took on the junior section also for a short while.

In the summer months I transitioned to cricket, and again came through the junior ranks into the senior sides. I have coached junior teams, been captain & most recently chairman of selectors, along with some other minor roles, and am still playing today.

It will give me great pleasure in assisting Mark in his and the sports clubs aims in the future and hope you will all support in moving this forward”

I am sure every member will support Mark and Jimmy as the club passes though these difficult times.

The Chairman’s Executive Report

The “Chairman’s Executive Report” concludes the years business with a summary from the Club Chairman, Tony Berzins, along with reports from the Treasurer, Club Functional Officers i.e. Ground, House & Bar, Membership and each Sporting Section. Unfortunately, unlike most years, there was little sporting success to speak of with lockdowns and Tier restrictions affecting most sport.

Rather than providing the Chairman’s report in hard copy format I have included a link to open the document in a new window at the end of this report.

Read it at your leisure it helps understand the challenges we face and where we wish to get to in the future.
