Football

Poynton FC, originally known as Poynton Amateurs Football Club, was founded in 1893 and has long been established as the premier club in the local area. Although football at Poynton Sports Club dates back to the early years of the clubs existence, Poynton FC were not a bona fide section of the club until 1967 when the plans to turn the football pitch into a hockey pitch were officially scrapped.   Few records of the club exist prior to the 1970s, however a decade of success saw the club rise from Lancashire & Cheshire league Division 3 in 1970 to Division 1 Champions in 1985.

In the same season they also lifted the Stockport Senior Cup and added the Cheshire Aggregate Cup to make it a hat trick of trophies. This success prompted the club to apply to join the Mid Cheshire League in 1986. The last twenty five years has seen the club establish itself with both the first XI and Reserves in the Mid-Cheshire League (now Cheshire League).

Since 2001 the 1st XI have finished Division 1 runners-up twice, won the Presidents Cup twice and won a hat trick of Stockport Cups in the same period. The Reserves won the Macclesfield & District Cup in 2002 and successive Mid-Cheshire League Cups in 2007 & 2008.

More recently in 2011, the club introduced a Youth Team, playing in the East Cheshire Sunday Football League, establishing a fundamental link and pathway between our junior and senior sections.

Football (Junior)

In 1985 Poynton Juniors was one of the founder members of the stockport metro league. In their 1st season they won a trophy and have added to that on a regular basis. In recent years the club have won the under 9s and u10s 7-a-side trophy on 3 occasions and reached the final on a fourth. A league and cup double was won in 2007,2008,2009,

However it is not all about winning but giving the children the opportunity to play the game that is loved the world over. Currently, teams range from U7s to U21, all the children are encouraged to enjoy themselves and have a smile on there faces when they are playing, learning sportsmanship and the art of losing as well as winning.

Many players have prospered playing for the club and have gone onto play for many local teams as well as Poynton senior sides. Poynton Junior FC was also one of the 1st in Cheshire to be awarded Charter Standard and was voted Charter Standard club of the year in 2005.

The Children have also been given opportunities to have once in a lifetime experiences. In 2007, the club was asked to provide ball boys/girls for the FA cup final between Liverpool and West Ham and in 2008, the then U10s played at the newly opened Wembley stadium.

Looking to the future, the club runs training sessions for the children from the age of 5 and continues to support local schools with regular coaching sessions provided at many primary schools in the area. We also organise an annual 6-a-side competition for the schools the day before our very own football tournament.

The club continues to develop and provide the opportunity for local children to play football in an environment they can learn and enjoy.
